DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AIRPORTS

Dominican Republic airports are the gateway to the beautiful regions of this tropical island, and the size and variety fits every traveler need, be it a large international airport for major airlines, an executive smaller one for private jets or a small landing strip style one for light and recreational aircraft. The island`s North, South and East regions are all well represented by the local Civil Aviation institute (IDAC), which follows international certifications when providing training and guidelines for aviation in the Dominican Republic.

The first three airports listed here are in order of importance to travelers to Puerto Plata and the North region of the Dominican Republic. The Gregorio Luperon International airport (POP) is the one to fly direct to Puerto Plata, located 15 minutes away from the city center. Those visiting the North Coast will choose this one first before all the others, for obvious reasons. The second choice for travelers is the Cibao International (STI), located in Santiago and about 1.5 hrs away from Puerto Plata.

It is a great airport and often used by travelers due to the larger availability of flights and cheaper ticket prices. Cost of transfer is higher, here some math applies to calculate the distance and cost of choosing STI when traveling to Puerto Plata. The Third Choice is Santo Domingo Las Americas Airport (SDQ) which is located in the capital of the island, 4 hours away from Puerto Plata. Transfer cost alone makes it the last choice, due to the distance.

Punta Cana airport (PUJ) offers direct flights from over 26 countries, 64 cities and 90 airports around the world. Being the busiest of all airports in the island with over 7.6 million passengers arriving every year it has become a standard in service. This international airport is favored by executive and private aircraft of travelers to the East of Dominican Republic.

La Isabela airport (JBQ) is primarily used for domestic flights and some international flights to other Caribbean islands such as Curacao, St. Maarten, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Havana, and Port Au Prince (Haiti). La Isabela airport has the largest number of hangars for Dominican based carriers. Operators such as Air Century offer domestic flights from this airport to Santiago (DR), Aruba, Curacao, Habana, Cuba, Miami and other destinations.

El Catey Airport (AZS) is an international airport located in Samana, 40 minutes away from Santa Barbara, the capital. It serves the North East area of Samana, with a large runway that can accommodate 4 Boeing 747 aircraft. Airlines flying to El Catey are Air Canada, Air Europa, Air Transat, American Eagle, West Jet, among others.

La Romana airport (LRM) is the ideal one to choose when traveling to La Romana, and more specifically, world class Casa de Campo. Airlines flying to La Romana are Air Caraibes, Air Transat, Azur Air, Condor, Eurowings, TUIfly, Neos, and Ukraine International. Arroyo Barril (EPS) in Samana handles a lot of domestic flights, and also international. Charter flights are offered here by SAP Air. Maria Montez Airport (BRX) in Barahona is less active than most other airports in the island, a great opportunity for investors eyeing the Southwest of the island.
