Carnival Cruises`s Amber Cove Port in Puerto Plata has been a game changer in Puerto Plata, which once was at the very top as a Caribbean destination, now making a comeback with big investments like this cruise ship hub that connects the whole Caribbean region. The two-berth port was estimated to be a $65-85mm investment, built on 25 acres; equipped to dock 2 ships simultaneously, each with more than 4,000 passengers and 1,000 crew.
Inaugurated on January 2015, it opened a new era that prompted the Dominican government to repair roads and infrastructure in Puerto Plata, which in turn motivated store and restaurant owners to do the same, taking the city back to its former splendor. Security has also changed dramatically around Puerto Plata, now considered a model for other Dominican cities.
ACTIVITIES: Amber Cove is considered a destination of its own, as the port itself complements the island`s attractions by adding several swimming pools, water slides, a zip line, cabanas, water sports, basketball and volley court, and ping pong. The zip line is 650 foot, enough for the thrill of zipping down the line ( costs about $20 per person ). Other activities include aqua-boat cycles, kayak, pool floats and stand up paddle board rentals.
PORT STORES: The port has several stores and gift shops, with small stalls selling all sorts of Dominican handcrafts. The duty-free store has liquor, souvenirs and other supplies. The rest of the stores mainly sell clothing, jewelry, accessories and other related items.
TOURS AND ATTRACTIONS: Amber Cove offers tours and activities around Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete – the main attraction areas of the North Coast. The tours catalog is as varied as that in any major destination: catamaran tours, snorkeling, paddle board, ocean world, waterfall tours, the outback, horseback riding, museums, historical places and city tours – just to name a few for this article.
THE SKY BAR: offering 360-degree views of the port and surroundings, this is the perfect spot to have a drink and relax between activities. The Sky Bar is the highest point of the port, not far from the hillside cabanas and the zip line launch point.
